Our scene can no longer be ignored after years of exceptional content the mainstream platforms such as the Brits are finally giving the artists the recognition they deserve. Skepta, Stormzy and Kano have all been nominated for a variety of awards such as British breakthrough act and British solo act.

Even though I’m ecstatic at this news it has been a long time coming, our scene has been overlooked for over a decade all because of the abundance of false connotations many people associated with it. It’s sad to think the talent our scene has had been supressed for so long depriving numerous artists of awards and recognition they so rightly deserve. That didn’t stop our scene though our music has reached global audiences without the help of these mainstream platforms, which should only anchor how iconic our scene is.

It was impossible for the Brits to ignore us again after the exceptional year many artists within our scene have had. Stormzy reaching number 8 in the charts, Skepta’s outstanding performance in the charts with 4 singles reaching the top 100 in the UK singles charts and his iconic project Konichiwa reaching 41 in the UK Album charts all produced by his own label Boy better know. Alongside various collaborations with iconic brands, such as Levi catapulting him into the mainstream spotlight. Kano’s exceptional project Made in the manor reaching number 8 in the UK album charts, is an obvious factor when you take into account his Brit nomination and deservedly so. Many “mainstream” artists are unable to achieve this so, his accomplishment is even more prolific than I first thought. These artists amongst many others such as Giggs who produced one of the most iconic projects of 2016 in Landlord, have opened the door for the younger generation of artists within our scene to receive endless success. Why end at the Brits aim for Grammys aim for platinum plaques aim for eternal success. I honestly believe all of this is possible because the talent within our scene is endless, the artists have created their own unique genre that constantly develops so why limit how far our music can go?

What baffles me is why supress a productive source of UK based entertainment, the scene has a huge loyal following that is constantly growing. The industry should have capitalised on that rather than being ignorant and listening to those who spouted their idiotic opinions disregarding anyone who disagreed with them. Grime and Rap are sources of relief allowing people to open up about their own hardships helping them to cope with their personal problems, whilst earning money thus bringing more money into the UK. What part of that affects the UK in a negative manner?

So my final statement is this, please don’t ignore the talent our scene possesses and don’t feel like you shouldn’t create your own music because people may criticise you follow your passion because that’s all that matters if you enjoy what you do it’ll feel so much better than having a million pounds in your bank for selling out.
