Before I begin this article I want you all to understand this, I could write a generic track by track review of GSAP but what’s the point? Grime, Rap techno any music genre revolves around creativity so really I should respect that and Dissect Stormzy’s album in a creative manner. Am I wrong? Didn’t think so.
So this 16 track masterpiece is definitely a game changer that’s undeniable however Stormzy has being changing the game for years and that’s what people need to realise. His passion for the music he creates is obvious and that partially why I and millions of other people love his content and one of the most prolific reasons that people love him as an artist and an icon is his integrity nothing he creates forces him to compromise his beliefs which is admirable as we see a vast array of artists sell out for a pay cheque.
Now I guarantee you all clicked on the link to read a review of GSAP, so to begin that I am going to list my top five favourite tracks from the album (They change every time I take in the album so if you ask me to list them again it will have changed again.)
Mr Skeng – The vibe to this track had me skanking, the beat is crazy reminds me of old school “riddims” creating a nostalgic vibe so the fact it is combined with undeniably the most prolific new age emcee resulted in one of this year’s top tracks and it's only February. My favourite bar has to be “I do Rap then I do Grime then I do Rap then I sing then I roll right back” because it’s true Stormzy is one of the most versatile artists within the scene, he can spit the maddest crud, Rap about depression then sing Gospel music but it will still amaze his listeners because his musical talent is phenomenal.
Velvet – Jenny Francis (interlude) - now this song is one of my favourites for various reasons the song is a perfect example of Stormzy’s versatility he spits about a relatable topic in emotional problems revolving around a female lover, which is a clear contrast to Mr Skeng proving all his doubters wrong as he was able to engage me completely with both tracks. As well as engaging me I guarantee this song will be a huge hit with female listeners allowing him to increase his fan base hugely thus paving the way for even more success. Now one of the other reasons I love this track is Jenny Francis’ voice, its smooth and sexy can’t even lie I nearly fell in love with her voice for a split second so this song will always have a place in my heart.
100 bags- Now I think you all know why I Love this track, the message from his mum made me realise how much I have purely because of the time and effort and guidance my own mother gave to me. I realised how much I took her for granted and it hurt I had to accept I hadn’t been the best son and that she deserved better. I aspire to be able to feel the same way Stormzy spat in his lyrics, I want to make her proud I want her to see me succeed and know that none of that was possible without her. So Stormzy thank you 100 bags forced me to reflect and that allowed me to realise one of my most prolific faults.
Cigarettes & Cush- the melodies within this track are unbelievably soothing, I stayed up all night waiting for the album and heard this and it almost nearly sent me to sleep as the flow and vocals were so soothing. Lilly Allen is one of my all-time favourite artists anyway she is an unbelievably talented woman so witnessing her collaborating with another one of my favourite artists definitely lived up to my exceedingly high expectations. Now I had never heard of Kehlani before this song but I will never forget her name her voice is beautiful I could listen to her sing over and over, her musical talent is mesmerising and I am exceptionally excited to listen to the array of musical content she has created.
Crazy Titch Interlude- the honesty of Crazy Titch is absolute quality, for 2 minutes 42 seconds Crazy Titch speaks the realist stuff, Within 17 seconds he clarifies he doesn’t lie by stating “Alright look let’s just get one thing clear I don’t fuck about, I am the certi one I am the one they call the gangster of Grime” Instantly anchoring my previous point that he isn’t on this album to lie he is ready to drop some truth that we all need to take in. the most pivotal sentence within this Interlude is “But what people do need to understand is you see anyone from my era of Grime need to recognise that if you cannot fathom that this guy is about to take it from a 2nd rate genre to a first rate genre the you need to look at yourself and be ashamed.” This coming from one of the most iconic names within the early days of Grime is huge, this man is highly respected by the likes of Wiley, Devlin, and Ghetts and such forth so to receive such praise must be heart-warming for Stormzy and he definitely deserved it. Nothing Crazy Titch said was wrong and we all need to understand and support that in order to allow our genre to achieve the success it deserves, our artists deserve the chance to win Grammy’s, shut down Wembley and achieve all these other accomplishments many people believe are impossible.
The response Stormzy's album has received has being phenomenal, Netflix UK, Adele and Ashley Young are a few of the glorified platforms and celebrities that have supported Stormzy on his quest for global success. This should only anchor Stormzy's achievements as no one is able to ignore this young man from London any longer his musical powers have made him a force to be reckoned with.
You all need to take in the fact GSAP is number 1 in the album ITunes chart and his remix with Ed Sheeran of the Track Shape of you is currently number 1 in the ITunes single chart. He has accomplished an incredible amount and I believe it will only get better for the young man. One thing I need to say is I am sick and tired of hearing the statement “He has done a lot for an unsigned artist” are you crazy Stormzy has accomplished more than half of these “mainstream artists” I guarantee within the next five years he will have surpassed all of our expectations and will have brought Grime with him all the way.
